The Music

Uranus, Stefan Udell

Uranus

Uranus is the only planet that rotates on its side, which is why in astrology, the planet signifies the breaking of convention. Fittingly, Stefan Udell’s piece uses the piano in an exceedingly unusual ways that are reminiscent of his noise-based electronic compositions. The piece alternates between nearly static long tones and sudden bursts of chatter, which bring to mind the strange whistle tones and static of deep-space radio transmissions.
